Sensitivity of the Seismic Moment Released During Fluid Injection to Fault Hydromechanical Properties and Background Stress

Fluid pressure perturbations in subsurface rocks affect the fault stability and can induce both seismicity aseismic slip. Nonetheless, observations show that partitioning between seismic slip during fluid injection may strongly vary among reservoirs. The processes main properties controlling this are poorly constrained. Here we examine, through 3D hydromechanical modeling, influence of physical on response a permeable governed by slip-weakening friction law. We perform series high-rate, short-duration simulations to evaluate five parameters, namely initial permeability, dilation angle, drop, critical distance, proximity stress failure. For sake comparison tests, all stopped for fixed rupture distance relative point. find while hydraulic behavior is mainly affected change permeability mechanical depends drop Additionally, lesser extent impact spatiotemporal evolution events moment. Moreover, study shows modification such parameters does not lead usual moment-injected volume relationship, provides insights into why background should be carefully taken account better anticipate moment from injected volume.
